The University of Findlay volleyball team won Tuesday night (Oct. 20) against Tiffin University (21-25, 25-12,25-15,25-18) in Croy Gymnasium. With the win, the Oilers improve to 9-16 on the season and 3-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association (GLIAC).
The Dragons fall to 3-22 with an 0-12 record in the GLIAC.
The Oilers offense was led by junior Courtney Niemeyer who had 16 kills. Sophomore Erin Thomasson chipped in with 12 kills and 4 aces, followed by junior Jenny Slone who had 11 kills.
Tiffin used an 8 point run that included two kills from Brooke Bernabei and three Findlay errors to take a 17-13 lead in set one. The Oilers put on a late charge behind two kills from Niemeyer and an ace from junior Megan Florence , but Findlay couldn't close the gap and dropped the set 21-25.
Florence set the tone for the Oilers in the second set, leading off with a kill and 5 service points to give Findlay a 6-0 advantage.
The Oilers never trailed in the sets two and three on their way to wins at 25-12 and 25-15.
Florence had her strongest serving performance of the year with 5 aces. She also tallied 28 assists and 8 digs for the Oilers while sophomore Jessica VonIns had 23 assists.
Leading the Oilers defense was junior Abby LaVigne who had 10 digs.
Tiffin was paced by Bernabei with 17 kills and 6 digs. Brittany Teaford added 9 kills and 5 blocks for the Dragons. Amanda Marquadt anchored the scrappy Tiffin defense with 15 digs.
The Oilers will be back in action again tomorrow, Wednesday October 21st, when they host Urbana University at 7:30 p.m.
