Senior Marcus Parker
The University of Findlay men’s basketball team was picked to capture their eighth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division title in nine years according to the 2009-10 preseason conference poll as released on Wednesday, October 28. The Oilers received 140 points in the poll and were also given 22 out of the 24 first place votes.
The Oilers are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions after pulling off a perfect 36-0 season last year. They captured the title in dramatic fashion as Tyler Evans hit a three pointer at the buzzer in overtime to give Findlay a 56-53 victory.
The Oilers 36-0 record coupled with their national championship is the best mark in the history of NCAA Division II men’s basketball and during this decade, the Oilers have the highest winning percentage of any NCAA Division II men’s basketball team at .838 (238-46).
Findlay has also won four out of the last six GLIAC Tournament titles and will enter the season as the fourth ranked team in the nation according to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) preseason poll.
In addition, senior guard Marcus Parker was tabbed as the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year and will be looking to become the third Oilers player to receive the honor after former standouts Dustin Pfeifer and Josh Bostic captured the award in 2006 and 2009 respectively.
Last season, Parker was a first team all-conference selection and averaged 10.7 points, 4.1 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest. The former GLIAC Freshman of the Year has scored 1,023 career points in an Oilers uniform, ranking 38th all-time at Findlay.
