#4 Men's Basketball Heads To Duke On Tuesday

The University of Findlay men’s basketball team, ranked fourth nationally according to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) preseason poll, will take on Duke University on Tuesday, November 3 in Durham, North Carolina. The exhibition game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The University of Findlay

The Oilers are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions after pulling off a perfect 36-0 season last year. They captured the title in dramatic fashion as Tyler Evans hit a three pointer at the buzzer in overtime to give Findlay a 56-53 victory.

The Oilers 36-0 record coupled with their national championship is the best mark in the history of NCAA Division II men’s basketball.

During this decade, the Oilers have the highest winning percentage of any NCAA Division II men’s basketball team at .838 (238-46).

Findlay has captured seven Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division titles in the past eight years, won four out of the past six GLIAC Tournament championships and have reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament in each of the past eight seasons.

The Oilers have also reached the Elite 8 in 2005 and the Sweet 16 in 2008.

Duke University

The Blue Devils are coming off of a 30-7 campaign in 2008-09, reaching the Sweet 16 in the process.

The team will be led by Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer who averaged 16.5 and 14.9 points per game last year respectively.

Preseason GLIAC Player Of The Year

Senior guard Marcus Parker was selected as the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year in voting done by the head coaches of the conference on October 28.

Parker, a first team all-conference selection last season as a junior, averaged averaged 10.7 points, 4.1 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest. The former GLIAC Freshman of the Year also was named to the GLIAC all-tournament team as well as the Midwest Region all-tournament team.

During his career, Parker has racked up 1,023 points, the 38th best mark in Findlay history.

The Preseason Pick

The Oilers were selected by the media to repeat as GLIAC South Division champions in voting conducted on October 28. The Oilers have won seven out of the last eight divisional championships and four out of the last six tournament titles in the GLIAC.

Overall, the Oilers received 140 points in the poll with a league best 22 first place votes.

Grand Valley State University was tabbed to win the North Divison after receiving 130 points and 17 first place votes.

Preseason Polls

The Oilers are currently ranked fourth in the Preseason National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll which was released on October 28.

The Oilers went wire-to-wire as the top team in the country last season, becoming only the third team in the history of NCAA Division II men’s basketball to accomplish the feat.

Their 36-0 record plus their national championship victory is the best mark in the history of NCAA Division II basketball.

In addition, the Oilers are currently ranked second in the nation according to the Division II Bulletin poll which was released in September.

Simply The Best

The Oilers have the best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition during this decade. Since 2000, the Oilers have won 238 games and lost only 46 for a percentage of .838.

A Tough Place To Play

The Oilers are 473-106 (.817) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.

In the past five years, the Oilers are a staggering 103-2 at home for a winning percentage of .981.

Regular Season Home Winning Streak

The Oilers have currently won 73 straight regular season games in Croy Gymnasium with their last home loss coming against Gannon University on February 12, 2004 in 70-68 fashion.

Counting tournament play at home, the Oilers have won 36 straight games in Croy Gymnasium.

National Elite

The Oilers have appeared in eight consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 15-7 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship.

Findlay also reached the Sweet 16 in 2007-08.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers currently sport a 18-4 overall record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2009, 2007, 2005 and 2004.

Overall, Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event six times in the past seven years. They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won eight GLIAC South Division titles in their 12 year affiliation with the conference and have also won four conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2009, 2007, 2005 and 2004.
