The University of Findlay men’s basketball team, ranked fourth in the initial National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II poll, fell 84-48 to Duke University on Tuesday, November 3 in Durham, North Carolina.
The contest was a tale of two halves as the Oilers played excellent defense in the first half, holding the Blue Devils to only 36 points on 39.4 percent (13-of-33) shooting from the floor. The second half was a different story as Duke was firing on all cylinders to begin the period, pushing their lead to 33 points at 60-27 in less than seven minutes of action. The 24-4 run drained the Oilers and got the Cameron Crazies back into the game.
As a team, the Oilers shot only 25.3 percent (19-of-75) from the floor as the longer and lankier Blue Devils made life tough on Findlay’s shooters. The Oilers made things tough on Duke as well however, holding the Blue Devils to a 41.2 percent (28-of-68) shooting clip while also forcing them into 19 turnovers.
Duke out-rebounded the Oilers 59-38 but Findlay did manage to grab 16 offensive rebounds against the much taller Blue Devils squad. Duke also blocked 12 shots and came away with ten steals, the same amount as the Oilers.
Senior guard Marcus Parker led the way with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists while junior guard Nathan Hyde chipped in 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Blue Devils were led by All-American Kyle Singler who scored 20 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Jon Scheyer added 19 points while Miles Plumlee scored nine points and grabbed ten rebounds.
The Oilers will be back in action again on Saturday, November 7 when they face the University of Utah in an exhibition game beginning at 2:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City, Utah.
