Findlay, Ohio – As spring fast approaches, University of Findlay junior pitcher Mark Delas has been named 2018 Midwest Region Preseason Second Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA). Delas is one of just seven players from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) to have earned a spot on the first or second team.
Delas is coming off a year in which he made nine starts on the hill and compiled an ERA of 4.30. The Perrysburg, Ohio native struck out 73 batters, fourth-most in the GLIAC in 2017 and second-most in a season at FIndlay, in 52.1 innings of work. That included a career-high 12 strikeouts in his first game of the season against West Virginia Wesleyan.
Despite numerous outstanding performances, Delas' best performance is arguably his first ever. In 2016, the University of Toledo transfer took the mound as a collegiate starting pitcher for the first time. He subsequently tossed a no-hitter while striking out six against Gannon University to earn the win. For that effort, Delas was named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, the first of three times an Oilers pitcher would earn the award that season.
Delas and the Oilers are set to begin their season on Saturday, Feb. 24 with a double-header against Wheeling Jesuit.
