Kate Cummings is entering her fifth season as the head coach of the Oilers women’s basketball team during the 2010-11 campaign.
Last season, Cummings led the Oilers to a 22-9 record, as they captured the GLIAC South Division title for the first time since the 1999-00 season. Findlay also qualified for the GLIAC Tournament and reached the semi finals for the first time in school history before dropping out of the tournament in the second round.
The 2009-10 campaign also saw the Oilers reach the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in school history. The Oilers earned the fifth seed in the Midwest Region and defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 54-51 to reach the round of 32 before falling to top seed Michigan Technological University in the second round.
During the 2008-09 campaign, Cummings led Findlay to a 14-13 record, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the GLIAC Tournament.
In 2007-08, she guided Findlay to a 9-17 record with a 3-14 mark in the GLIAC. Two of the Oilers three wins in the GLIAC came over North Division champion Michigan Tech University and GLIAC Tournament qualifier Ferris State University.
During her first season in 2006-07, Cummings and her team went 6-21 with a 2-15 mark in the GLIAC. Her season was highlighted by a 66-65, last second win over Grand Valley State University, who was ranked 12th in the nation at the time.
Cummings came to Findlay from Ohio Dominican, where she posted a 204-144 record over 11 years. She also led the Panthers to four National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) tournament appearances including a berth in the “Sweet 16” during the 1999-00 season, en route to a school record 27 wins.
Cummings, who won an American Mideast Conference tournament championship in 2004, has coached nine NAIA academic all-Americans, eight 1,000 point scorers and Ohio Dominican’s first ever NAIA all-American.
A 1988 graduate from Gahanna Lincoln High School, Cummings received her bachelor’s of science degree in physical education and health from the University of Rio Grande in 1993. A forward on the women’s basketball team, she was instrumental in the Red women’s 1990-91 conference championship and was named first team all-conference and all-district that same year. Cummings also garnered NAIA all-American scholar-athlete honors while at Rio Grande.
Cummings also served as an assistant coach at Rio Grande for two seasons, helping the Red women win back-to-back conference championships in 1992-93 and 1993-94. The program also made a trip to the NAIA Division I national tournament in 1993-94.
From Rio Grande, Cummings made her way to Eastern Kentucky University and served as the women’s basketball graduate assistant. In 1995, Cummings completed her master’s degree in Sport Administration and assisted in the basketball team’s first ever Ohio Valley Conference title during the 1994-95 season.
Cummings and her husband, Kelly, have three daughters, Allyson, Bailey and Cameron.
