Senior Justin Welch was tabbed the Midwest Region Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on May 15.
Welch, who earned the same honor during the indoor season, was the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Field Athlete of the Year. He enters the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship as the favorite in the hammer throw at 69.94 meters. He is also seeded second in the discus at 56.39 meters.
The Luckey, Ohio native has won three national championships during his career with the Oilers. He won the 2014 and 2015 indoor national championship in the weight throw. He also scored a national title last year during the outdoor season in the hammer throw. He will be looking to repeat this year.
In addition, former UF track star Derrick Vicars, was named the Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Vicars, who also captured the same honor during the indoor campaign, guided his athletes to conference titles in the shot put, hammer throw and discus. He will have six of his athletes competing at the national championship next week in Allendale, Mich.
