The University of Findlay wrestling team opened their season at the Eastern Michigan Open on Nov. 7 in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The Roughnecks were led by junior Nick Goebel, who took fifth place in the 149-pound weight class with a 6-1 record. Goebel began the open with a pin against Ohio State's Blake Riley-Hawkins in 4:56 before narrowly losing 5-4 to Michigan State's Austin Thompson. He then scored a major decision win over Ohio's Zach Wilson (9-0) before taking care of Cleveland State's Grant Turnmire by a score of 8-1. Goebel continued his streak with a 6-4 win against Purdue's Nate Limmex and then topped Michigan State's Mark Bozzo 4-2. The Bloomdale, Ohio native then capped the open with a 3-2 victory against Eastern Michigan's J.J. Wolfe in the fifth place match.
Red-shirt freshman Alonzo Turner also posted a 2-2 record for Findlay in the 165-pound weight class.
The Roughnecks will be back on the mat again on Nov. 15 when they compete in the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich.
