Tiffin, OH – The University of Findlay women's soccer team locked in the number four seed in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament with a double overtime win against the Tiffin Dragons on Tuesday, October 23. The 2-1 overtime win moves the Oilers to 10-3-2 on the season, which is the first time in 11 years that they have reached double digit wins. They are 9-3-2 in conference play. The Dragons move to 23-15-1 on the season and 2-11-1 in conference play.
The Oilers had good momentum in the first half, with four shots taken and four corner kick opportunities while the Dragons had none. However, neither team was able to put any goals on the board before the half ended.
Two minutes into the second half, the Dragons were able to sneak the ball past junior Anna Money to give them the first goal of the game. The Oilers were taking shots left and right but were unable to get the ball past the Dragons goalie. It wasn't until the 79th minute that sophomore Karleigh Clere crossed the ball to freshman Sami Hild who put it away to tie the game at 1-1. Regulation time ended and the game was sent into overtime.
The Oilers took six shots in the first overtime period while the Dragons took none, sending the game into a second overtime period. The Oilers had great intensity and played down the last minute of overtime when sophomore Shannon Marsh went 1v1 with the Tiffin goalie to score the golden goal to end the game.
Junior Anna Money was in net for the Oilers and made two saves in the win.
The win has given the Oilers the home field advantage in hosting the quarterfinal game on Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 PM. They will face the winner of the Ohio Dominican and Cedarville game being played tonight at 7:00 PM in Cedarville, Ohio.
